What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a mobile social-network application that allows users to send pictures and videos to each other within seconds.  A twist on this is that these mediums are only temporary in that they disappear after a certain period (24 hours at the maximum).  These private interactions are the basis of Snapchat.  However, the application has also expanded into more public domains by introducing “Discover” and “Story” functions in which users can view photographs, articles, and videos by other media entities such as ESPN, Buzzfeed, CNN, National Geographic, and others.  Additionally, other users can submit their stories to a themed-public feed and be viewed by everyone who uses Snapchat.  Currently, Snapchat has 158 million daily active users, 30% of whom are millennials, with over 2.5 billion snaps sent per day.  Snapchat is projected to make nearly 950 million USD in ad revenue in 2017.  The average amount of time spent on Snapchat per user is 30 minutes a day (Smith, 2017).snapchat0
